Which Teas are Safe to Drink During Pregnancy?

As with anything during pregnancy, it's best to do your research first before ingesting foods or drinks so as to avoid complications. Some contraindications are well known, such as shellfish, raw fish, organs, caffeine and so on...

Some aren't too well known and this includes taking precautions when drinking tea.
Many teas contain caffeine, which as mentioned above - should be avoided.

Drinking caffeine whilst pregnant can inhibit the ability to absorb nutrients which in turn would normally be passed on to the baby, and also deplete the adrenal glands.

There are many teas that can and should be consumed while pregnant as they can be beneficial to both the pregnancy or even help the act of childbirth go more smoothly.

Certain herbal teas can also act as a replacement, be it temporary or permanent, for your usual drinking habits.

Let's start with...

Teas to drink during pregnancy

Teas to Drink While Pregnant

Nettle Tea:

High in Iron, Magnesium, and Calcium, this tea is a great essential all-round tea that ensures you're getting the right levels of the above for your baby.

Peppermint Tea:

Much like Ginger tea, Peppermint will also aid with digestion and nausea. A proven remedy and one of the main components within our bloating remedy tea.

Rooibos Tea:

Rooibos is extremely popular and just so happens to be caffeine-free, antioxidants, and calcium - making it a great tea to be drinking whilst pregnant. Also safe for children and good for the skin!

Raspberry Tea

This one is definitely not to be missed and is perhaps the most recommended tea to be drinking whilst pregnant. Protection against post-partum hemorrhage and helps to prepare the uterus for labor. Best taken from the second trimester. After 24 weeks, one cup a day, 30 weeks two cups a day, and then 3-4 cups a day at 36 weeks onwards.

Ginger Tea:

Ginger is known to reduce nausea and help with digestion. Something that many pregnant women would welcome. It could be your answer to that annoying morning sickness many experiences whilst pregnant.

Teas to Avoid During Pregnancy

Anything with caffeine!

Drinking caffeine during pregnancy has been avoided for a long time, mostly due to circumstantial evidence. Interestingly enough, once studies were performed on the effects of drinking caffeine during pregnancy - they couldn't really find anything. However, we'd advise not to break tradition on this one and avoid it altogether just in case.

Herbal Teas to Avoid:

Within the herbal teas family, these should especially be avoided:

  • St John’s Wort
  • Don Quai
  • Ginseng
  • Yarrow
  • Pennyroyal - Red alert! Known to cause miscarriage.
  • Ephedra
  • Licorice Root

Chai Teas:

Most Chai teas should be avoided as they contain caffeine.
Drinking caffeine-free black tea is normally fine if taken just once a day or so if you just miss the taste. Keep in mind that it does still contain very low levels.
