chamomile tea for anxiety

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health conditions people suffer from worldwide. There are many different ways of dealing with the symptoms that come with anxiety disorders but many involve long-term medication. One of the most common alternative medicines for anxiety is Chamomile Tea.

Are there any Medical Studies on Chamomile Tea and Anxiety?

For many years herbalists have used Chamomile tea to treat the symptoms of anxiety but more recently, medical studies have taken place observing the effect of long-term Chamomile tea usage on anxiety patients.

The results have concluded that regularly consuming Chamomile tea can lower the rate of relapse in patients who suffer from General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and make their condition easier to manage.

It is speculated that Chamomile tea is having a specific kind of effect on neurotransmission which causes it to act as a natural antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication.

While there are currently no continuous studies on the effects of consistent long-term Chamomile tea consumption, the studies that have already occurred have shown Chamomile tea to greatly improve a person's anxiety levels. We have also illustrated how Chamomile tea can help reduce anxiety for children and toddlers as well.

How to use Chamomile Tea for Anxiety?

If you are thinking of using Chamomile tea to help relieve the symptoms of anxiety, it is said that between one and four cups per day that have been steeped for 5 to 10 minutes is the perfect amount to feel any beneficial effects from the tea.

In a 2016 study, it was proven that between 220 milligrams to 1,600 milligrams of Chamomile per day would be enough to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and also improve sleep. This means to find the perfect amount of Chamomile you need daily to feel more calm, can take a little bit of trial and error. It is important to check the ingredients of your Chamomile tea to calculate how high the content of Chamomile is within each bag. Of course, this is something that varies with each brand of tea bags! You could also experiment with loose-leaf tea however you would potentially get a less accurate dosage of Chamomile than if you were to only use tea bags.

How Long Does it Take Before you Feel the Effects?

The time it takes for Chamomile Tea to affect a person varies depending on the individual but the average time that it takes is just 8 weeks. It can be a little difficult at first to get into a routine of drinking the tea regularly but once you get used to it drinking Chamomile Tea for anxiety can become a very pleasant daily ritual.

How to Sweeten Chamomile Tea

If you do not enjoy the taste of plain Chamomile tea, you can add some honey as a natural sweetener. Try to avoid using any sugar as there are some studies that show excessive sugar consumption can increase anxiety levels in people so it would counteract the effect of the Chamomile Tea. Chamomile tea is usually enjoyed without any additives as it is delicious on its own!
