Butchers Broom Root (Ruscus aculeatus L) is also known as Knee Holly, Sweet Broom, Box Holly and Jew's Mantle. This has been used as a remedy for a number of ailments such as circulatory issues, diuretic, gallstones and many others.

However where Butchers Broom really shines and why we have made this an addition to our Tea Life range is the effect it can have on the veins, namely post-thrombotic syndrome. Studies have shown very good results in using this root as a natural remedy for Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) which can normally be a little difficult to treat.

It's thought that Saponins and the compound Esculin are the little helpers in Butchers Broom root that help to aid against CVI.

Orthostatic hypotension is also something that Butchers Broom is known to aid against.

  1. Add around 1 1/2 teaspoons to strainer in hot water. This is a heavy root tea.
  2. Steep for 5 minutes with the cup covered.

Health Benefits

Venous tone and circulation: Traditionally used to treat symptoms of chronic VENS insufficiency such as heavy, aching legs, varicose vein, and hemorrhoids. Ruscogenins might tighten vein walls and enhance venous return.

Anti-oedema support: decrease ankle swelling and fluid retention by decreasing capillary permeability, with a mild diuretic action.

Vascular integrity: Contains saponins & flavonoids with antioxidant / anti-inflammatory activity to support capillary strength / microcirculation.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Limit safety data to avoid except where advised by a healthcare professional.

Blood pressure/heart medicine: Antihypertensives may compete with or enhance effects of vasocongestants/decongestants, e.g. Watch out if you have hypertension or take cardiovascular medicines; seek medical advice.

Anticoagulants/antiplatelets: Take warfarin, DOACs or aspirin with caution and consult your doctor.

Kidney issues: mild diuretic effect might not suit significant kidney disease; Diabetic diuretics may affect lithium levels - consult your doctor.

Surgery: Quickly stop 1-2 weeks before surgery unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Side effects: Frequent gastrointestinal upset / headache / dizziness / skin rash / increased blood pressure in sensitive individuals - stop use if these occur.

Red flags: New or worsened leg swelling, calf pain/warmth, shortness of breath or rectal bleeding warrant prompt medical assessment and not self-treatment.

How much is shipping?

Couriers Please Shipping is $5.95 for orders under $60 and free for all orders over $60.

Australia Post is always at cost. Orders going to Po Box or Parcel Locker address may be locked in to Australia Post.

What are your transit times?

We dispatch within 24-48 hours (sometimes much faster) and from there we'll see 1-3 days transit to most metro locations within Australia excluding WA and NT which can take a week or so.

We also offer express post which will help speed up the process, at cost with no handling fees. These are always sent as priority and packed first.

Are your teas certified organic?

Up until recently we were certified organic but due to rising administration costs and the difficulty of maintaining certification we've put this on hold for now. Our suppliers and farms remain the same without any change but just now label things are organic, pesticide free or wildcrafted.

This also allows us to maintain our current pricing without any increases which we feel is more important at this time.
