It’s time to welcome in the Lunar New Year and what better way to do so than with tea? The Year of the Snake is time to shed negative energy and awaken new beginnings so we’ve put together some blends of Asian tea to help you celebrate.
Chinese Tea Traditions
For Chinese New Year it is common to gather with family members and enjoy a sweet, red tea together. The idea behind enjoying this sweet tea is that the incoming year will then reflect the tea and be sweet too!
Honouring a Traditional Tea Ceremony
If you choose to purchase a Chinese tea from our Scent of Asia tea then you might want to honor the traditions behind it and hold a small tea ceremony. You do not need to go to any extreme lengths to make it an enjoyable and symbolic part of your celebrations during the Lunar New Year.
Prepare Your Tea Set
You’ll need a teapot, teacups, tea strainer, kettle, water, tea leaves, tray, and tea leaf holder for your tea ceremony and of course, a Chinese tea of your choice!
You can research the different tea sets used for different kinds of tea for example, white porcelain is often chosen when serving green teas but of course, you can also work with what you already have.
Rinsing the Teapot and Teacups
Gently rinse off your teapot and teacups with hot water which will help to preheat your tea set. This allows the best flavours to be tasted when enjoying your tea.
Add the Leaves to the Teapot and Wash
Carefully add your Chinese tea leaves to your teapot aiming to fill around a third of the pot with leaves. You then pour a little hot water onto the tea leaves, let it sit for a few seconds, and then pour it out. This washing of the tea leaves removes any dust or impurities from your tea.
Brew the Tea
You can start to brew your Asian tea making sure to pour the hot water equally into the teapot. You should aim to heat every part of the teapot equally in order to brew the very best cups of tea.
Pour and Serve Your Chinese Tea
Pour your tea into the teacups for your guests and then serve it to them to enjoy it together. When serving guests, it is polite to offer them their teacup with both hands so you show respect to them.
Choosing Your Lunar New Year Tea
Now this could depend on how your family choose to enjoy your tea over the Lunar New Year, personal preferences, and even traditions from previous years. However, we have got a few suggestions from our Scent of Asia range if you’re feeling a little lost!
