Genmaicha Tea

Genmaicha is Japan's comfort classic: a green tea blend - usually sencha, bancha - with roasted brown rice. The rice is pan toasted to nutty caramel edges; A few kernels "pop," giving this tea its amusing other name - popcorn tea.

Tea blended with grain was meant to soften price and flavour but stuck - fresh green leaf balanced by warm, toasty cereal notes. Expect pale gold-straw infusion with mild umami, soft sweetness and tidy finish; the rice rounds off the leaf edges so the brew is friendly even if you steep a little longer.

Because it's typically everyday bancha, and the blend dilutes leaf with rice, the perceived caffeine kick is typically milder than straight sencha, making Genmaicha an easy afternoon sipper and entry point for new green-tea drinkers.

It is also a flexible food tea: great with sushi, grilled veggies, miso-forward dishes & simple biscuits. Cool things down with a cooler; make it meadow-sweet; A little longer makes toast richer without becoming bitter.

Hot or iced, Genmaicha has a nourishing, savoury-sweet profile that does not come across as grassy or stringent.

Brewing

Western style (mug/pot)

2-3 g per 250 ml.

75-80 degC water

2 minutes, then taste

Re-steep: 2-3 times; Add 30 sec each round.

Gongfu style (optional/unorthodox):

6 - 8 g per 100-120 ml.

75-80 degC water

5-10 sec for first infusion Lie down for 5-7 rounds.

Iced / cold brew

5-8 g/L cold filtered water.

Refrigerate 4-6 hrs; strain (sweet and toasty).

Nope - it has roasted rice - but it has less caffeine than most green teas.

Are there added flavours or sugars?
No. Real genmaicha has green tea and roasted rice without flavours or sweeteners.

Does it get reheated?
Yes - if pre-brewed gently reheat; avoid boiling. Or enjoy cold. Refrigerate immediately and consume within 24 hours.

How do I store it/how long does it keep?
Keep cool, dry and away from light. Genmaicha may remain good for 4 years when stored correctly, but its fresh aroma should be appreciated earlier.

How much is shipping?

Couriers Please Shipping is $5.95 for orders under $60 and free for all orders over $60.

Australia Post is always at cost. Orders going to Po Box or Parcel Locker address may be locked in to Australia Post.

What are your transit times?

We dispatch within 24-48 hours (sometimes much faster) and from there we'll see 1-3 days transit to most metro locations within Australia excluding WA and NT which can take a week or so.

We also offer express post which will help speed up the process, at cost with no handling fees. These are always sent as priority and packed first.

Are there any discounts available?

We're quite generous with our loyalty programs, and the best way to take advantage of them is to create an account here. Also if you subscribe to our newsletter you'll gain access to members only discounts, rewards and an initial 10% off first order.

Are your teas certified organic?

Up until recently we were certified organic but due to rising administration costs and the difficulty of maintaining certification we've put this on hold for now. Our suppliers and farms remain the same without any change but just now label things are organic, pesticide free or wildcrafted.

This also allows us to maintain our current pricing without any increases which we feel is more important at this time.
